Darbar

Last Friday Frankie and I headed to Glebe for a drink and some dinner. Last time we did this we only managed the drinking part, so this time we were definitely going out to dinner! We were going to go to this Korean restaurant that I read about, but as we were walking we passed another restaurant that I had been wanting to go to as well. It looked very nice from the outside, so we ventured in.

The inside of the restaurant is very beautiful and doesn't look like your typical indian restaurant, more like the inside of an old stone house that would be attached to a winery or something. We were ushered to a table that was on this sort of stage, which was strange.

I had been looking at the menu online prior to going to there and saw they had Dosa, which I had been wanting to try for ages, so we chose that as our entree.

Mysore Masala Dosa - $11.90

This was a chef's recommendation as well, so I was expecting it to be good, it wasn't. Didn't have much flavour at all and the filling only filled less than half the rice pancake. The accompaniments were pretty tasteless as well. It was my first try of this though, so i will try it somewhere else before I make my decision on Dosas!

Next up we got the Fish Mahkini

Fish Makhini - $17.90

Fillets of ling fish barbequed in Tandoori and simmered in tomato baked, royal sauce with a touch of fresh coriander. This was quite tasty but nothing special.

Gutti Vankai - $15.90

Got to have an eggplant dish usually when we go vego. I hardly ever eat eggplant at home, but when I go out if it's on the menu I have to get it. Gutti Vankai is
stuffed whole baby eggplant (Brinjal) in a ground paste of cashew, peanut, sesame and coconut cooked to perfection in Hyderabadi style (popular south Indian dish). This was also good.

Saffron Basmati Rice - $2.90

We also got some rice which was very pretty with its fried onions on top, as well as the platter of side dishes ($18.90) of which included Papadums, Tomato, Onion and Cucumber Salad, Sweet Mango Chutney, Hot Pickle, Cucumber & Yoghurt Raita, and Lemon Pickle.

I would recommend to go here for the atmosphere and the service and the food, but in that order.

Dosa/Dosai are usually only filled with a little bit of goodness - ie. it's not totally stuffed. So it sounds like you got the standard fare there - it's more about the actual pancake thing itself than the fillings. It's a shame it was bland though - the extras should be delicious; I love going through them all separately and tasting the goodness - don't give up on them yet!!!

Hi Anon - yeah i was quite disappointed in the blandness of the dish and the extras. I haven't given up on them yet though, don't worry! thanks
